Still seeking to fill the void they experienced last season when the retirement of Jerome Bettis left the offense without a power-type tailback, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached agreement with free agent Kevan Barlow on a one-year contract.

Financial details of the agreement, which has been rumored for the past several days, were not immediately available.

A Pittsburgh native who attended that city’s Peabody High School and then starred at the University of Pittsburgh, the six-year veteran signed the deal Thursday. He will be on the field Friday morning for the team’s first mandatory minicamp under new coach Mike Tomlin.

Barlow, who grew up idolizing Steelers Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, met with Pittsburgh officials last week. He also generated interest from several other teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, after he was released by the New York Jets early in the spring.

I’m not sure if I like this pick or not but for the most part I think it fills a hole and he’s a good fit for the 4-3. So, not a bad choice.

Despite never starting a game on defense before his junior year, was rated the ninth-best outside linebacker in college by ESPN prior to the 2006 campaign and named to Street & Smith’s All-American preseason list…Rated the fourth-best outside linebacker in the country by Rivals.com and named to Prep Star’s Top 100 team, in addition to picking up Super Prep Elite 50 honors as a senior at Wilson High School…He earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and was the top prep prospect in the state of South Carolina his final campaign.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Who Do We Need in the Draft?

Do we need a Linebacker to replace Porter? A good backup RB? Another playmaker at WR? A hard nosed Defensive lineman? Someone to protect Big Ben? Well, not one jumps out at me, in fact, they all do. What may take precedence for the Steelers is getting a versatile playmaker, outside linebacker or not, that will allow them to transition from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense.

That is why the Steelers have been linked with players such as Florida State linebacker Lawrence Timmons and Nebraska defensive end Adam Carriker, to name a few, in mock drafts. Timmons appears capable of playing outside linebacker in both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense, and draft analysts have said the 6-foot-1, 234-pounder could also line up at defensive end in a 4-3 alignment.

Carriker, meanwhile, could line up at tackle in a 4-3 and end in a 3-4. He could possibly play outside linebacker in a 4-3, though speed would be a concern. “He’s big, he comes hard every play and to me, any defensive structure you want, Adam Carriker is going to fit into it,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said.

What structure the Steelers will have is nothing more than an educated guess at this point.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, a 4-3 disciple, has said the Steelers will stick with the 3-4 at least through next season because their personnel is best suited for it.

Tomlin has dismissed the importance of base formations — he also hasn’t ruled out using both a 3-4 and a 4-3 as situations dictate — but who the Steelers draft, particularly in the first round, could give more than a glimpse into what shape the defense will take in future years.

It’s officially over… sad but true.

I can’t believe the season we are having, it’s been unbelieveable. Which team will show up, which Ben will show up, which Defense will show up.. wow. That was a good old fashioned ass kicking by the Ravens, a team on a mission this year. They showed up to beat us and it was like we showed up to get paychecks……

This is almost the exact same team as last year, minus a few players. You can’t tell me that Randle El, Hope, Kimo an Bettis carried this team last year? Did they? How about tackling? When did we forget how to tackle? I hate to be negative but this has been a very frustrating year for Steeler Fans.

Well, I guess we’ll get a good draft pick and have an easier schedule last year and I can recoup some of the funds I spent going to the playoffsand Super Bowl last year…LMAO
