Still seeking to fill the void they experienced last season when the retirement of Jerome Bettis left the offense without a power-type tailback, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached agreement with free agent Kevan Barlow on a one-year contract.

Financial details of the agreement, which has been rumored for the past several days, were not immediately available.

A Pittsburgh native who attended that city’s Peabody High School and then starred at the University of Pittsburgh, the six-year veteran signed the deal Thursday. He will be on the field Friday morning for the team’s first mandatory minicamp under new coach Mike Tomlin.

Barlow, who grew up idolizing Steelers Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris, met with Pittsburgh officials last week. He also generated interest from several other teams, including the Indianapolis Colts, after he was released by the New York Jets early in the spring.

I’m not sure if I like this pick or not but for the most part I think it fills a hole and he’s a good fit for the 4-3. So, not a bad choice.

Despite never starting a game on defense before his junior year, was rated the ninth-best outside linebacker in college by ESPN prior to the 2006 campaign and named to Street & Smith’s All-American preseason list…Rated the fourth-best outside linebacker in the country by Rivals.com and named to Prep Star’s Top 100 team, in addition to picking up Super Prep Elite 50 honors as a senior at Wilson High School…He earned Defensive Player of the Year honors and was the top prep prospect in the state of South Carolina his final campaign.

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I know my Canadian Friends are Bummed.

We met some guys early in the ’05 season from Canada and had a blast tailgating with them over the last few years. This great group of guys has to be bummed out as our favorite player has been released and has moved on to the Arizona Cardinals. Yep, Special Teams standout and part time Wide Receiver Sean Morey is gone. I can’t believe it.

I enjoyed Sean’s enthusiasm on special teams and it was very rare not to see #80 not make the first contact on the kick returner. However, I am happy for Sean, as he did get the chance to play on the Championship team and be a part of that special season. Better yet, he has a nice ring to show for it. :) I know my Dad and I will miss Sean and his buddies from that great country to the north. Keep in touch guys!

Guys, when you read this, send me some Steeler Lager. eh? ;)

It was great fun fellas! We’ll miss the Tailgating Fun.
